CIE TOUR
The CIE Tour, launched by the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, was an amazing initiative designed to help aspiring young minority individuals like myself the opportunity to pursue their careers in the entertainment industry. My first encounter with the tour was nothing short of transformative. It was here, that I met the incredible human being I have, Robert Zuckerman, a legendary photographer known for his work in blockbusters like "Terminator" and "Transformers" “Bad Boys” “Training Day” and Pursuit of Happiness which is one of my favorite movie posters. This meeting would later blossom into a mentorship that has profoundly impacted my career (more on Robert in a future post!).

Coming from Haiti to New York, I had dreams but no direct path to the entertainment industry. but I knew with enough determination the opportunity would present itself. I just had to trust the universe. That first tour opened my eyes. Hearing leaders like Jada Smith, Reginal Hall, and Shawn Martinbrough, share their journeys, I felt a surge of possibility—my dreams seemed not just far-off fantasies but achievable.
Fast forward to the next CIE tour, and there I was, in front of over 200 people, no longer just a participant but a speaker and hosting a photography workshop. I shared the stage with some of the very influencers who once inspired me, discussing my journey and the art of photography. After the talks, I led a photo workshop, where I could engage directly 1;1 with students eager to make their mark on the world through art. It was exhilarating to listen to their aspirations and share insights from my self-taught journey, all thanks to the vast resources available on the internet.
The highlight for me was not just sharing my story but also showing by example that dreams can manifest into reality with enough determination and the right opportunities. My path took me from sitting in the audience to helping others see their potential, culminating in an internship at Stink Studios—one of the top agencies in the world. I'll dive deeper into that experience in an upcoming post.
This journey with CIE has been a full circle, and I'm here to tell you: Wherever you are in your journey, keep pushing. Go out there, seize every opportunity, and remember, every challenge is a stepping stone towards your goals.
Stay tuned for more stories, and remember, never stop dreaming!

March 7, 2024, marked the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. I remember my first trip to Selma, Alabama when I traveled with twenty-five students from York College. We journeyed by bus for twenty-two hours to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The ride was long but worth it. The long Greyhound bus ride reminded me of the civil rights movement when groups of people would travel by bus. It also made me realize how grateful I should be; fifty years ago, it was dangerous for a group of Black people to travel to the South.
Our first stop was to meet some of the elders from Selma. Most of them had lived through that time. It was fascinating to listen to their stories—they were so welcoming, and I loved the Southern hospitality. We met and had dinner with some of the civil rights activists. The next night, we attended a gala with many Black leaders from various walks of life. There were singers, poets, and an indigenous African dance band performing. Listening to Dick Gregory's unfiltered speech, Al Sharpton, and hearing Martin Luther King III proudly speak of his father were unforgettable experiences.
Walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge was an emotional experience. I walked alongside many who had participated in Bloody Sunday fifty years ago, including John Lewis, Jesse Jackson, and President Barack Obama. Listening to Obama’s powerful speech was incredibly inspiring. I got to witness being made history.
As a Haitian, this moment was particularly poignant. The first time I voted was when I was 19, living in North Carolina. Right before a vacation to Haiti, I made sure to register and cast my ballot. Voting for Obama, the first black president filled me with immense pride. I thought of Toussaint Louverture standing tall on his horse in Port-au-Prince, a symbol of heroism and resilience. He would be proud of this accomplishment, I am.
I have been blessed to experience and document this historic moment. Reflecting on this journey, I am grateful, for how much people sacrificed and fought for our rights.

RICHARDSON
RICHARDSON
Richardson - January 2013
I met Richardson during one of my yearly trips to Haiti, back in January 2013, a meeting that left an indelible mark on my soul.
Richardson's story is not unique in Haiti, a country plagued by political corruption, and economic instability. Kids especially young boys find themselves navigating the streets of Port-au-Prince, fighting for survival every day. He informed me that his mother lost her life in the devastating earthquake of 2010, leaving him orphaned, He never knew his father.
During our conversation I asked him how he survived, - Richardson's with a fierce look, through his eyes, you could tell he had seen enough to be conscious of his being at this age. How do you survive I asked him. "I must fight to survive," he replied. "Where do you sleep?" - Richardson, "Sometimes I have to pay 50 gourdes if I want to sleep at the market, if I didn't make enough money that day, I sleep in the cemetery or anywhere I can find.
April 04, 2024 - 10 years later, gangs tightened their grip on the country, seizing control of both private and public institutions. Looking at a collage in my bedroom on the far right side there’s a photograph of Richardson. I wonder where Richardson is, what has become of his life?
In sharing Richardson's story, I hope to shed light on the struggles faced by Haiti's youth and inspire others to take action. Together, we can create a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances
This blog post is dedicated to Richardson and all the children of Haiti who deserve a chance at a better life.

how my sketch turns into the photographs. my recent project featuring my long-time favorite, Versace Eros. Drawing inspiration from the dramatic interplay of light and shadow in classic paintings, I wanted to capture the cologne as if it were a treasured artifact unearthed from a forgotten mysterious place.
Growing up in Haiti, I spent much of my time outside exploring the world around me. One of my favorite spots was the rooftop of our home in Fontamara, located in the southwest of Port-Au-Prince. Our house stood on top of a hill at the center of a 3-way intersection, forming a Y shape. Standing in front of our home, I could see the Caribbean Sea; for a better view, I'd climb to the rooftop. We had a grapevine whose branches extended over the roof, creating a natural canopy. It was the perfect place for me to daydreaming without interruptions. Lying on a bed of dry grape leaves, I'd munch on sour green grapes.
I wanted to create an atmosphere that is both dramatic and intimate. I visualized a soft directional light source that appears to come from the front side, perhaps a window, casting a shadow on the background wall and highlighting the embossed details of the design of the bottle to help create a sense of depth. I hope you find it as fascinating as I did creating it!
At that time, I didn’t realize that this ability to visualize would become a crucial tool part of my creative process and personal goals. My mother taught me how to visualize what I wanted from an early age. I plan to delve deeper into my visualization process in a future post. I try not to force the creative process, often I would let the concept marinate in my mind for a few days and not think about it. Out of the blue, an image comes to mind before it fades I would sketch on whatever is at hand, or on my iPhone before it fades away. My drawing can seem a little abstract; similar to a drawing of a 5th grader. Yet, this process allows me to bring the concept I have in my mind into a 2 dimension world.

"The Unknown," explores the mental, physical landscape of deserted places thy self. This series is a visual representation of personal growth and the beauty of embracing the unknown. Just like the peeling paint on these forgotten walls, I urge you to shed the past and step boldly into the unknown. It's an introspective journey – We all cling to things that hurt us. We're afraid of letting go, so we latch onto people, circumstances, clothes, money, relationships, anything. We are terrified of “The Unknown”. But just like a fly clinging to a wall, eventually, we get swatted. Emotions are like that too. Cling to them long enough, and you'll start to believe you are the feeling. It defines you.
Most of our troubles are due to our passionate desire for and attachment to things that we misapprehend as enduring entities.

The story behind these images is even more captivating! Join the growing community! additional insights, & the final reveal of the full collection. Subscribe to my newsletter so you don't miss Part 2, part 3 where I reveal the inspiration and process that brought this project to life.

One of the most captivating parts of this project was the location. Each house was a journey - I was attuned to the energies of these spaces, once I stepped inside, often through the back door or a broken window. Some bore signs of recent visitors – cigarettes, needles, used condoms. I wasn't the only one drawn to these spaces. Each house held a unique energy. I remember stepping on something when photographing the Falling image, a chill ran down my spine, and I had goosebumps. so I tried to translate the physical and emotional responses through these images and I allowed that to fuel my creative process for this project. Perhaps, that's why each experience felt so different.—Furniture, and personal items, each carrying the echoes of the past. I’ve used found items throughout the series others are from thrift shops or fleamarkets. Each piece used serves as a metaphor for the memories we all carry.
People seem to find me mysterious- maybe that I am- I’m not trying to be there's always an opportunity to learn more about the world each time you meet someone new. -In "The Unknown," I choose not to reveal the face—allowing viewers to project their emotions and own narratives onto the images.
A pivotal element in this project is incorporating digital painting techniques alongside traditional photography. AI did not alter the images - Photographed with a Canon60D - The project also pays homage to Picasso’s Blue Period, known for its emotional depth and melancholy- Reference - The Weeping Woman, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Blue Nude.
