EROS

EROS

how my sketch turns into the photographs. my recent project featuring my long-time favorite, Versace Eros. Drawing inspiration from the dramatic interplay of light and shadow in classic paintings, I wanted to capture the cologne as if it were a treasured artifact unearthed from a forgotten mysterious place.

Growing up in Haiti, I spent much of my time outside exploring the world around me. One of my favorite spots was the rooftop of our home in Fontamara, located in the southwest of Port-Au-Prince. Our house stood on top of a hill at the center of a 3-way intersection, forming a Y shape. Standing in front of our home, I could see the Caribbean Sea; for a better view, I'd climb to the rooftop. We had a grapevine whose branches extended over the roof, creating a natural canopy. It was the perfect place for me to daydreaming without interruptions. Lying on a bed of dry grape leaves, I'd munch on sour green grapes.

I wanted to create an atmosphere that is both dramatic and intimate. I visualized a soft directional light source that appears to come from the front side, perhaps a window, casting a shadow on the background wall and highlighting the embossed details of the design of the bottle to help create a sense of depth. I hope you find it as fascinating as I did creating it!

At that time, I didn’t realize that this ability to visualize would become a crucial tool part of my creative process and personal goals. My mother taught me how to visualize what I wanted from an early age. I plan to delve deeper into my visualization process in a future post. I try not to force the creative process, often I would let the concept marinate in my mind for a few days and not think about it. Out of the blue, an image comes to mind before it fades I would sketch on whatever is at hand, or on my iPhone before it fades away. My drawing can seem a little abstract; similar to a drawing of a 5th grader. Yet, this process allows me to bring the concept I have in my mind into a 2 dimension world.
